Nokonwaba Lititie Zozi

My name is Nokonwaba Lititie Zozi. I was born in the Eastern Cape and studied there up to Grade 9. I came to Cape Town in 2003 but could not study because of financial problems. I married at 18 in 2006, which was very young.

In 2008 I had my first child and she is now 12 years old. I started work as a domestic worker and in 2010 gave birth to my second child. I worked three days a week but had to quit because I got home sometimes at 8 pm. I was then working 2 days a week but I became pregnant again – that’s when I said, this is enough. I am a hard worker but doing domestic work was not my dream. I always wanted to be a nurse or a social worker but could not qualify without matric.

I made a decision to quit my job and look for a home-based care course. I saved money so that I could send my child to a crèche (childcare) so that I could do the course but then my niece told me about the Communiversity and my husband said, “You should go to the Communiversity, as that will be the best place”.

So here I am with a few more weeks until I graduate in December. Being 32 yrs. old, I thought I would not cope – that I will fail – but the Communiversity staff have been so supportive and encourage us to go forward. Through the Communiversity, I applied to study Primary Health Care at the College of Cape Town. I was so excited when I got a call from their admissions office to say that my application was successful!!

I came to the Communiversity and found a family and my future. On behalf of the community in Vrygrond/Capricorn, thank you for being here where it is needed the most. Continue the good work and may God bless you!
